Breakfast Session

Early Career Researcher (ECR) Breakfast
Professor Barry Marshall, Nobel Prize Winner 2005.
"Helicobacter pylori - the origins of a Nobel Prize".

Thursday 8th November 2007
0645 – 0745
Cost: $35.00 – optional cost activity for ECR Delegates.

Professor Barry Marshall, was joint winner of the 2005 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine for his work with Dr Robin Warren in discovering a hitherto unknown bacterial species (later denoted Helicobacter pylori) from biopsies from patients with gastric inflammation, duodenal and gastric ulcers. From this work, it was discovered that patients could be cured from their peptic ulcer disease only when the bacteria were eradicated from the stomach.

Thanks to the pioneering discovery by Professor Marshall and Dr Warren, peptic ulcer disease is no longer a chronic, frequently disabling condition, but a disease that can be cured by a short regimen of antibiotics and acid secretion inhibitors.

It is DOHaD 2007’s great privilege to present this Nobel Laureate in an exclusive breakfast for Early Career Researchers in which he will speak on his career, the difficulties, and how he has managed to become a household name around the world with his outstanding achievements in science with the award of a Nobel prize.

Melbourne Cup Day Welcome Lunch
Tuesday 6th November 2007
1100 – 1400

It’s the race that stops a nation. Australia stands still as 24 horses run 2 miles in just over 3 minutes, in one of the world’s most prestigious horse races, The Melbourne Cup.

It’s your chance to dress up or dress down for a welcome lunch that features this world famous race live on the big screen. Join fellow delegates in embracing the revelry and excitement of an icon of the Australian sporting landscape, whilst savoring a lunch to remember.

Traditionally the Melbourne Cup, held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, draws crowds of over 100,000 dressed in everything from the sublime to the ridiculous. It is so revered that it is actually a public holiday in Melbourne, whilst elsewhere around the nation work comes to a standstill as people flock to functions and events to catch a glimpse of the big event and bet on the outcome. In fact, in 2006 alone Australians bet close to $140 million on this one race.

Cost: Included in the fee for Fully Registered Delegates. Guest tickets $55.00 each.
Dress: The choice is yours. Ladies, hats and flowing dresses are always a focal point for “Cup Day” and Gentlemen, everything from pin stripe suits to wetsuits have been seen at “The Cup”. Or you can just come as you are.
